Les pleurs de Psychée
[CD]
Thomas C. Boysen, baroque lute
Jacques Gallot, Robert de Visée, Mr de Launay, Pierre Dubut
When the pandemic brought the world to a standstill in 2020, concert halls, churches, and music institutions fell silent. Musicians could no longer perform for audiences or even play together. While many people turned to new hobbies, I finally had time to focus on an instrument that had long fascinated me, the 11-course baroque lute.
Around 1700, the lute in France was experiencing its final flowering. Composers like Jacques Gallot and Robert de Visée represent this refined tradition. Their works, together with anonymous pieces from the period, reveal a rich musical art that continued to develop in a small circle of lutenists even as the lute slowly faded from prominence.
